Delta Adds Nonstop Flights to Bahamas

· When possible, avoid outdoor activities during the hours between 10 AM and 4 PM, when the sun's rays are the strongest.

· Always wear a broad-spectrum (protection against both UVA and UVB) sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.

· Be sure to reapply sunscreen frequently, especially after swimming, perspiring heavily or drying off with a towel.

· Wear a hat with a 4-inch brim all around because it protects areas often exposed to the sun, such as the neck, ears, eyes, forehead, nose and scalp.

· Wear clothing to protect as much skin as possible. Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, or long skirts are the most protective. Dark colors provide more protection than light colors by preventing more UV rays from reaching your skin. A tightly woven fabric provides greater protection than loosely woven fabric.

· To protect your eyes from sun damage, wear sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB radiation.

· Consider wearing cosmetics and lip protectors with an SPF of at least 15 to protect your skin year-round.

· Swimmers should remember to regularly reapply sunscreen. UV rays reflect off water and sand, increasing the intensity of UV radiation and making sun protection especially important.

· Some medications, such as antibiotics, can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the medicines you take and learn more about extra precautions.

· Children need extra protection from the sun. One or two blistering sunburns before the age of 18 dramatically increases the risk of skin cancer. Encourage children to play in the shade, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen regularly.

With its candy-cane-striped lighthouse and pastel-colored clapboard houses, the boats floating in the serene harbor on one side and the Atlantic Ocean in that magical color of aqua on the other, Hope Town as a quiet beach destination is on a par with other places we have traveled much farther to get to.

Just an hour's flight from Florida and a 20-minute ferry ride from the town of Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco, Elbow Cay, the 4 ½-mile-long barrier island where Hope Town is situated is a water-lover's paradise where time seems to stand still. With its slow pace and relatively few tourists, Hope Town is the exact opposite of what many people think of as the Bahamas.

The Abacos -- and the other Out Islands of the Bahamas -- offer a laid-back getaway for people who want to spend their vacation far from the crowds of a cruise ship or 3,000-room resort.
The white-and-turquoise resort offers 12 hotel rooms, 12 cottages and cabanas and the two-story Butterfly House, all with picture-postcard views. Passport rules may be eased

The nation's new post-Sept. 11 requirements for traveling abroad continue to cause anxiety for travelers and wreak havoc with vacation plans, with the turn-around for passports now estimated at 15 weeks. But relief appears to be on the way, says an article highlighting the new US passport developments in the Cincinnati Post.

The Bush Administration is expected to announce a temporary suspension of some of the new rules, which required passports for air travel to and from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The proposal would allow travelers to present a government-issued identification card, such as a driver's license, and a receipt from the State Department showing that they had applied for a passport. Such travelers might then receive extra scrutiny at security checkpoints, such as questioning or bag checks, one official familiar with the proposal said.

The suspension would give the State Department a chance to reduce some of the backlog of applications while soothing angry travelers and some members of Congress - including some tri-state lawmakers - who have tried to intervene on behalf of their constituents. U.S. Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, has co-sponsored an amendment to the immigration bill that would allow travel across borders in the Western Hemisphere with an alternate ID, such as a birth certificate or valid driver's license, until the passport crisis passes. "The State Department has lost control of the situation. I do not believe the current implementation plan is realistic and I question how the department failed to anticipate and prepare for the increased demand. Summer travel is not a new phenomenon."

Prior to implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative in January, U.S. travelers to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean didn't need passports. State Department officials expected the change to increase the demand for the documents, but travelers, travel agents and federal lawmakers say the agency has severely underestimated the impact of the change. It's now taking up to 15 weeks to secure a passport, complicating the travel plans of millions of Americans.

To meet the rising demand for passports, the U.S. Department of State has increased its staff, added a new passport-processing center and has worked employees overtime. The production rate has increased 33 percent and is averaging about a million and a half passports each month, said department representative Janelle Hironimus.

But that doesn't seem to be enough. After receiving thousands of complaints from constituents, federal lawmakers from the tri-state say they are trying to head off even more headaches when the next phase of the initiative begins in January 2008. At that time, any travel - by air, land or sea - outside the United States will require a passport.

Virtually all the islands are rimmed by coral reefs and sandbanks; nearly all are low lying, either flat like a pancake or gently undulating. Cat Island, Crooked Island and further south are the more undiscovered areas of the Bahamas and are known for their natural, simple beauty and solitude.

The possibility of diving with dolphins, shark and rays has made the Bahamas very famous. Humpback and blue whales are often sighted in the waters east of the islands. Moray eels, grunts, barracudas, stingrays, queen triggerfish, sand tigers, parrotfish and angelfish are animating the scenery on a typical dive in a scene set up with an impressive array of hard and soft coral. Wrecks are plentiful and ships, planes and even a train (off Eleuthera) make for excellent variety.

The Bahamas is a year-round destination with an incredible number of 320 average days with sunshine a year. Literally no runoff from the islands and minimal sedimentation is creating some of the clearest tropical waters in the world. Divers can expect visibility to run from 80 to 150 feet (25 - 45) year-round, with the very best visibility often found immediately after winter is over - around February or March.

The Islands Of The Bahamas celebrated Bahamian culture during Caribbean Week 2007, by sharing aspects of Bahamian cuisine, entertainment, and heritage with residents and visitors in New York City. During the week of events, hosted by the Caribbean Tourism Organization, the Director General of Tourism, Vernice Walkine, and Deputy Director General, Ellison Thompson, took part in various Caribbean Week workshops, meetings and events that brought together tourism ministers, tourism directors, and city and state officials from across the Caribbean.

During the Caribbean Fair and Vacation Mart, guests were exposed to destination wedding experiences and cultural characteristics of The Bahamas including live straw purse weaving and chances to win wedding prizes. Bahamas Travel Passport Update

The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced June 8, 2007 that U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean (of which the Bahamas are considered part for these purposes), and Bermuda who have applied for but not yet received passports can nevertheless temporarily enter and depart from the United States by air with a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007. The federal government is making this accommodation for air travel due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand.

Visitors to The Islands Of The Bahamas who are pending passports will need to show valid photo ID and official proof of application (passport status notice downloaded from the State Department Web site at http://travel.state.gov/) through Sept. 30, 2007 to travel by air back to the United States.

Bahamasair Experiences Revenue Growth, But Still Losing Money

According to the Minister of State for Tourism and Aviation, Branville McCartney, the Bahamas' national flag air carrier, Bahamasair, has experienced several years of revenue growth, but the airline's expenses have grown even more, causing it to continue to lose money.

Since the 9/11 attacks in the US, the airline industry has been under tremendous pressure, particularly with the increase in the cost of security and the increase in the cost of fuel. In fact, according to Mr. McCartney, the airline’s management has a "Herculean" task in trying to reduce expenses. In 2006, the airline lost $20 million, and has budgeted to lose $16 million for 2007, a trend in the right direction.

On April 11, 2007, with a dive time of 3’09” and without the assistance of fins, ropes or weight belts, William Trubridge reached an unassisted free dive depth of 82 meters at Dean’s Blue. Two days prior, Trubridge made free diving history by reaching 81 meters, shaving a meter off the previous record set by Czech diver Martin Stepanek in 2005. The 27 year-old from New Zealand is now known as the man the holds the new world record for free diving.

Athletes of Special Olympics Bahamas (SOB) from Grand Bahama, Long Island and host island New Providence are expected to show off their ability in swimming and track & field at the annual championships. Tourism Minister Concerned About Low Repeat Visitor Numbers

The rate of repeat visitors to Nassau and Paradise Island was just 51.8 percent and in Grand Bahama, 54.6 percent, substantially lower compared to 65.7 percent for the Bahama Out Islands.

According to the article published today in the Bahama Journal, the Minister of Tourism and Aviation Neko Grant said these low numbers should make Bahamians concerned why a large percent of visitors are not returning to The Bahamas.

Tourism is the number one industry driving The Bahamas and a plan is in place to help increase repeat visitors to The Bahamas. For starters, the FNM government has already commitment to increasing the level of Bahamian ownership of tourism-related enterprises, and according to Mr. Grant the government will implement a policy to empower Bahamians to participate in the Tourism industry. Other provisions to come will be requiring foreign investments the maximum use of Bahamian-produced materials and increase development of tourism and hospitality education and training.

The Out Islands, experiencing a higher rate of repeat visitors than Nassau and Paradise Island, are at forefront of Mr.Grant's plan to increase tourism in all the Islands. He stated they will add entertainment programmes and take a more business approach for small hotels and cause for improvements to airport facilities in the Out Islands.

2007 National Family Island Regatta – Exuma, April 24-29

Visiting Exuma Bahamas or Eleuthera Bahamas just got easier for vacationers, since Delta Air Lines announced new nonstop service from Atlanta, GA to these two Bahamas tourist attractions. The new flights will start at a perfect time for those vacationers wanting to spend their summer vacation in the Bahama Out Islands.

Beginning on June 16th 2007, Delta Air Lines is adding two new routes between Atlanta, GA and George Town, Exuma and North Eleuthera. The new flights will be operated by Delta Connection carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA) through Delta’s largest hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, GA.

Margie Schneider, Director of Strategic Planning & Marketing for the Bahama Out Islands Promotion Board, states, “The Out Islands have long been an unexplored beautiful paradise because of accessibility issues with visiting Eleuthera and Exuma, Bahamas. New Travel Requirements

New U.S. government regulations require all adults and children (even newborns) to have a valid passport for all international travel by air.

Effective on January 23, 2007, under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), new requirements for citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to present a passport to enter the United States when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere.
